Real Ghost Stories of Lacey Township

The Lacey Township Historical Society & the Recreation Department have planned a supernatural event for the whole family. S’Mores at the fire pit, mysterious search for the Jersey Devil, and a ghostly candlelit tour of the Old Schoolhouse Museum. Excursions begin at 6:00 pm to the last tour at 8:40 pm.

Haunted Seaport

The Jersey Devil

For centuries, the story of the Jersey Devil has been part of the culture of southern New Jersey. A fire-breathing monster with the head of a horse, bat wings and the body of a kangaroo. The creature is said to be the thirteenth child of a Mother Leeds, born in 1735 when the woman put a curse on her unfortunate offspring. Informed at a tender age by his grandmother (aka BeBop) that he is distantly related to the beast, author Bill Sprouse, explores the story behind the tale of his family's connection to the famous monster. Copies of his book, “The Domestic Life of the Jersey Devil: or, BeBop's Miscellany” will be available.

For the 12:30 program, participants can bring a lunch or take advantage of our lunch option for $6.00

Brandt Carving

Join the Tuckerton Seaport and Master Carver Jode Hillman for an intensive TWO DAY class in which students will learn the methods and techniques needed to carve and paint a Hollow cedar Redhead decoy. Students may choose a hen or drake to carve and paint; painting will be done in oils. Pre-registration is required by October 1, 2018.

LBI Museum Mission Statement

The Long Beach Island Historical Association collects, preserves and interprets the history of Long Beach Island through its educational programs, guest lecturers, walking tours, special events and an ever growing research center. The museum, situated at the center of Beach Haven’s Historic District, showcases 24 exhibits which includes over 450 photographs and hundreds of artifacts for the sole purpose of encouraging the public to not only understand our island’s rich history but also to appreciate the people and events who helped in shaping its character.

A Plan to Protect the Barnegat Bay-Little Egg Harbor Estuary

The Barnegat Bay-Little Egg Harbor estuary is under threat. Suburban sprawl and over-development prompted the Governor of New Jersey in 2010 to direct the NJ Department of Environmental Protection to research and develop a protection plan for the Ocean County bay.

Citizens from the region, recreational users, commercial fisherman, activists, scientists, and land developers all shared their experiences with the NJDEP to develop a research strategy towards formulating new regulatory policies and a management plan for protecting the bay.

On Wednesday, August 15, 2018 join the Tuckerton Seaport and speaker Thomas Belton at 1:00PM during this session as it explores how his research impacted the protection and stewardship planning.

Issues of concern to the environmental regulatory agencies and the public include: nuisance jellyfish blooms, excess nutrients, the imminent closure of the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant on the bay, the benefits of marine conservation zones, and the status of the fish, crab and shellfish populations.

Noteworthy is the collection of these data before and after Superstorm Sandy came ashore at BB-LEH, and its impact on the shallow bay.

This program is part of the NJ Council for the Humanities Public Scholars Project. Speaker Thomas Belton is a Research Associate in Science Writing with the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. He is a retired Senior Scientist with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection where he served as the Research Coordinator for the Governor’s 2010-2016 Action Plan for the Barnegat Bay-Little Egg Harbor Estuary.

His book “Protecting New Jersey’s Environment: From Cancer Alley to the New Garden State”  was named an Honor Book by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities due to its ability to take complex scientific information and put it into language and entertaining stories that everyone can understand. In his book and his lectures, he points out how people search for environmental remedies in their neighborhoods and the challenges they face that result in what Belton calls bare-knuckles environmental protection, replete with back-room political deals, infighting, criminals, and hapless victims. Belton demonstrates the ways that scientists, regulators, lobbyists, and politicians interact and offers the public a go-to guide on how to seek environmental protection in practical ways.

Kids Makerspace

Calling all parents and grandparents! Bring your little islanders ages 6 to 12 to the LBI Museum for fun and learning on Mondays from 10:30 AM - NOON, all summer!

“MAKERSPACE at the Museum on Mondays” is a great experience for everyone. Last Monday the children enjoyed seeing how tall a “building” or how large a “construction” they could make using only pipe cleaners. But first they, in three groups, everyone enjoyed a tour of the museum’s Victorian rooms, and displays. Amazing was the kitchen equipment, a child’s bedroom and clothes, and all the funny toys Beach Haven children had to play with a century ago.

During refreshments on the porch children and parents were treated to a loud blast through an old ship's megaphone showing the only way the sailor at the top of the mast could communicate with the crew on deck in those days.

The LBI HISTORICAL MUSEUM, is located at Engleside Avenue in Beach Haven.

Ghost Tour

Gather around when the sun goes down to learn about supernatural events that have happened around Beach Haven. This ghostly experience takes place Tuesday's and Wednesday's through Labor Day beginning at 7:00pm at the LBI Historical Museum.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for children age 5-12, children younger than 5 free. Reservations are required before 6:00pm.Cash Only.
